Joel P. Jensen Prevention Plan
At Joel P. Jensen Middle School, we focus on creating a welcoming and supportive place for all our students. We do this by building strong and healthy relationships with them. We use Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) to encourage good behavior. This includes fun things like PROWL Cards, the Swag 'n Go store, Teacher Trading Cards, and recognizing students for their achievements.
We also teach our students how to be global citizens through Wayfinder Lessons. These lessons help them learn important social and emotional skills. We stay connected with our community through the School Community Council (SCC) and Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). Inclusivity is important to us, so we encourage it through our resource office, Student Body Officers (SBOs), and after-school clubs.
Supporting Students and Families
Our school believes in prevention and offers support to both students and their families. Here are some of the things we do every day:
- Self-Advocacy: We teach students to speak up for themselves using a multi-tiered support system (MTSS) that addresses both behavior and academic needs. This is one of our "Power Skillz."
- Social-Emotional Learning: Our student services provide lessons that help students connect with each other while learning about social and emotional topics.
- Reward Systems: We promote positive behavior through different reward systems as part of PBIS.
- Counseling Services: Student services offer individual counseling and small group meetings to talk about issues like grief, loss, depression, and anxiety.
- Data Management: We use Panorama data management to find students who need extra help.
- Mental Health Resources: Our school gives access to mental health resources through Student Services, which includes the Jordan Family Education Center and the Mental Health Access Program.
- Partnerships and Training: We work with District departments to ensure every student's success. Our mental health providers, including school counselors and psychologists, are trained by the District to use the best practices in prevention and intervention.
- Early Warning and Support Tools: We use early warning systems, content monitoring, and anonymous reporting to support students who might be at risk.
- Parent and Family Resources: We offer resources such as evening seminars and classes through the Jordan Family Education Center for parents and families.
In these ways, Joel P. Jensen Middle School aims to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for everyone in our community.
